The village was also, devastated by the 1956
earthquake and has never completely recovered, but it is dramatic, striking
and quieter than tourist-frenzied Fira, although it's narrow passageways are
also filled with art galleries, craft shops, expensive jewellery boutiques,
souvenir shops, restaurants and coffee shops. The town hosts a cultural
centre, and many cave houses and traditional homes have been converted into
luxury boutique hotels.
